Focus Areas

With its accession to EU Bulgaria is entering an extremely important stage in its development. The UNDP Country Programme for 2006-2009 stresses on preparing Bulgaria for EU membership and afterwards supporting Bulgaria to use fully the development opportunities of EU membership. As a trusted partner of the Bulgarian government, local authorities, civil society and private sector and based on combining international best practices and Bulgarian experience, UNDP stands ready to offer an effective response to the main development challenges.

UNDP activities in Bulgaria are focused in the following key thematic areas:

Within each focus area UNDP works within several specialised sub-areas. These sub-categories help to better focus UNDP development activities at national level, provide framework for its projects and programmes and bind them with well defined outcomes.

Following the priorities set in the current Country Programme (2006 – 2009), UNDP Bulgaria implements projects and programmes in the following focus areas and their respective sub-areas:  

1. Achieving the MDGs and reducing human poverty

1.2 Pro-poor policy reform to achieve MDG targets
1.3 Local poverty initiatives, including microfinance
1.4 Private-sector development
2. Fostering democratic governance
2.1 Policy support for democratic governance
2.2 E-governance and access to information
2.3 Decentralization, local governance and urban/rural development
2.4 Public administration reform and anti-corruption
3. Energy and environment for sustainable development
3.1 Access to sustainable energy services
3.2 Sustainable land management to combat desertification and land degradation
3.3 Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity
