Democratic Governance for Equitable Local and Regional Development

Democratic GovernanceImproving democratic institutions and introducing procedures more receptive to the needs of the ordinary citizen are two major challenges both government and civil society are facing. Led by its mandate, UNDP supports good governance examples and practices for attaining more equitable human development. Encouraging democratic governance directly supports the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, endorsed also by the Bulgarian Government.

Through pilot projects, strategic advice and advocacy, UNDP supports initiatives aimed at efficient governance and decentralization, broad civil participation in decision-making, and accountability and transparency at all levels of government in Bulgaria. Special emphasis is given to the provision of the fundamental social services and to support for a balanced regional development, as well as strengthening partnership capacities in the absorption of the EU funds.
