Conservation of Globally Significant Biodiversity in the Landscape of Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains

The project assists the people in the Rhodopes in protecting local nature and working for the economic, cultural and social development of the region.

An initiative of UNDP and GEF, the “Rhodope” project protects globally significant biodiversity and to promote its sustainable use in the Rhodope Region. The project aims to conserve the unique natural and anthropogenic mosaic of habitats, species and land uses that form the Eastern and Western Rhodope landscapes. Activities are focused in areas with sensitive ecosystems and landscape components, such as priority conservation areas, buffer zones and corridors, as well as more general forest, pasture and agricultural lands. Bulgarian and international partner co-financing provides the economic development baseline for provision of incremental inputs from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
